Research Interests:
  • We have built a set that contains matrix-assisted laser desorption / ionization (MALDI) coupled with an orthogonal acceleration time-of-flight mass spectrometer (OA-TOF-MS). Using synchrotron radiation light source with tunable soft X-ray to excite specific atom of a biological molecules, the core electron is stimulate to a particular molecular orbital followed by ionization and fragmentation simultaneously. The composition of the ionic fragments and some other features will be obtained by utilizing time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Using this method and the knowledge of element- and site-specific properties learned by other scientists, we are going to obtain the specificity of selective bond dissociation of bio-molecules (especially carbohydrates) from mass spectra. The analyzed data will be utilized to help determine the structure of important biological macromolecules such as carbohydrates through a series research of biological molecules. The short-term goal is to study the selectivity of bond breaking for small biological molecules/sugar-based molecules and to look for bio-molecular mass characteristics of selective bond breaking by comparing the mass spectra of different positions of excited oxygen atoms or carbon atoms.
