About NSRRC / Organization

Radiation & Operation Safety Division

The Radiation and Operational Safety Division is responsible for the radiation protection and safety & health management in the NSRRC. We also set up a health care room to provide health services and first-aid medical treatment.

Radiation protection

The radiation protection work includes radiation shielding design, detector development and maintenance, radiation monitoring and measurement, accelerator access control and interlock system, etc. We follow the principle of “As Low As Reasonably Achievable” to ensure the radiation safety of personnel, so that the radiation dose received by staff members, outside users and contractors working in the NSRRC is lower than the regulatory dose limit for general public which is 1mSv/year.

Real-time radiation monitoring system

Radiation monitoring stations are set up in the accelerator area and the beamline experimental area of the TLS and TPS in the NSRRC to monitor the radiation dose. Once the cumulative dose reaches the design limit 2μSv within 4hr, the system will send a trigger signal immediately and terminate the radiation source to ensure the radiation safety of personnel. The injection process will be stopped until next counting period. Through analysis and comparison of the database of monitoring results, we are able to understand real-time dose distribution and operating conditions of the accelerator that subsequently provides a valuable reference for accelerator tuning.

Occupational safety and health

The Radiation and Operational Safety Division supervises the safety and health management in the NSRRC. Its responsibilities are to formulate, plan, supervise and promote safety and health management issues, including risk assessment and operation control, chemical safety, biosafety, safety training, contractor management and safety audits, etc. Through the management cycle of PDCA, our goal is to prevent accidents, occupational disasters, and to ensure the safety and health of personnel.

NSRRC Safety Policies

  • Regulatory compliance, to provide a safe working environment for our staff and outside users.
  • Risk control, to identify and control the release of hazardous materials to uphold public safety.
  • Sustainable development, to monitor and continuously promote safety management and its proficiency to ensure sustainability of our facility’s operation.

Safety training

Staff members, outside users and contractors must pass the safety training before entering the control area of NSRRC. The training purpose is to inform the possible hazards and to notify the safety precautions in the workplace. At the same time, the access cards and TLD badge service will be activated after the training.

Safety training has three different training materials designed for staff members, outside users and contractors. Please visit the home page of NSRRC and you can find the link for safety training.

Health care room

The health care room provides health services, health information, first-aid medical treatment and emergency services.

  • Location: Administration Building, Room T217 (next to the User Administration & Promotion Office)
  • Extension: 8217
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED): You can find in the health care room and TLS control room.

Emergency evacuation

When evacuation is required in the event of an emergency in the NSRRC, please go to the nearest assembly points to facilitate the personnel's inventory and follow-up contingency measures. The first assembly points is located in the front turf of gate No. 2, the exit of the Administration Building, and the second assembly points is located in the turf outside of the Instrumentation Building.

If you are in the TPS, Administration Building, Utility Building, or Activity Center, please report to the first assembly points. If you are in TPS, TLS, Research Building, or Instrumentation Building, please report to the second assembly points.
