NSRRC Activity Report 2023
122 NSRRC ACTIVITY REPORT 2023 The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) established the "Energy Saving Leadership Award" to advocate energy-saving practices and acknowledge outstanding commitments to energy audit and management systems, energy efficiency, and carbon emission reduction, particularly during the summertime. This award is the highest domestic honor for energy conversation and carbon emission reduction initiatives. On July 20, the award review panel visited the NSRRC for an on-site evaluation and announced that the NSRRC had been shortlisted. Since the worldwide energy policy is based on saving, efficiency, and usage of renewable energy, the Taiwan government has also focused on energy conservation issues in recent years. To be an energy-efficient facility, the NSRRC has continuously improved its energy efficiency according to the ISO50001 energy management standard and taken several measures to meet these goals since 2019. The NSRRC replaced the old and low energy efficiency air compressors with a variable frequency inverter and IE4 grade motor. Furthermore, the NSRRC also used air handling units with EC fans to save energy and improve reliability, simultaneously. The fan rotation speed of the cooling towers was optimized and an outer air wet-bulb temperature interaction method was adopted. The energy consumption in 2022 decreased by 3.55 GWh and 0.75 GWh compared to 2019 and 2021, representing a 4.9% and 1.1% reduction, respectively. Additionally, carbon dioxide emissions were reduced by 2,796 (7.5%) and 1,372 (3.8%) tons. Moreover, thanks to optimal operation of the cooling towers and rainwater recycling system measures, water consumption was reduced by 10,341 (6.2%) and 3,779 (2.4%) tons compared to 2021 and 2019, respectively. The NSRRC will continue to utilize these measures and designs of renewable energy production, electricity saving, energy storage, and power suppression in peak periods. 12 th SAC Meeting NSRRC Shortlisted for Energy Saving Leadership Award The 12 th SAC Meeting took place in June 2023 after a 3-year suspension. The MOEA Energy Saving Leadership Award review panel visited the NSRRC on July 20 for an on-site evaluation. Director Chia-Hung Hsu received recognition for NSRRC’s shortlisting for the award. After a 3-year suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 12 th Science Advisory Committee (SAC) Meeting, chaired by Prof. Keith Hodgson, took place on June 28 and 29. NSRRC managers presented on the current operation status of the TLS and TPS; NSRRC’s strategies for the Interdisciplinary Program on energy studies, biomedicine, and semiconductors; and the upgrade plans for the Taiwan- contract beamlines at SPring-8 in Japan. NSRRC scientists gave reports on the status and research results of TPS phase-II beamlines and the construction progress of the phase-III beamlines.
