NSRRC Activity Report 2023
136 NSRRC ACTIVITY REPORT 2023 The 12 th X-ray Summer School took place at Sun Moon Lake. The Training Course on Thin Film Analysis by X-ray Scattering was attended by 44 students and researchers. Summer Internship Training Course on Thin Film Analysis by X-ray Scattering To promote research related to synchrotron-related sciences and establish a foundation at the undergraduate level, the NSRRC has organized summer internships since 2013 for college juniors and seniors interested in devoting five weeks to studying and working in a synchrotron facility. A total of 34 students were accepted for the 2023 Summer Internship program held from July 30 to August 30. Lectures given by NSRRC scientists during the first week covered fundamental concepts ranging from accelerator science to research based on NSRRC beamlines. From the second to fifth weeks, students joined laboratories or endstations to work with scientists on structural analysis of materials, X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray microscopy, synchrotron-based X-ray microscopy, molecular science, life science, soft- matter studies, accelerator technology, and design and analysis of X-ray instrumentation. The Training Course on Thin Film Analysis by X-ray Scattering was held on August 8 and 9, and 44 students and researchers attended. On the first day, Director Chia-Hung Hsu gave a lecture on crystal structures and principles of X-ray diffraction, and NSRRC beamline scientists from TPS 09A introduced several thin-film analysis techniques, beamline components, and a thin-film scattering instrument to attendees. On the second day, the NSRRC beamline scientists demonstrated data analysis, analytical drawing, and control software for the thin-film scattering instrument. The cryostat system at TPS 09A and the Student User Cultivation & Hands-on Practice Program were also explained to the participants. The objective of the summer internship was to promote synchrotron- related sciences at the undergraduate level.
