NSRRC Activity Report 2023
128 NSRRC ACTIVITY REPORT 2023 Synchrotron Light Source Forum at the 2023 Chemistry National Meeting Synchrotron Radiation and Neutron Research Forum at the 2023 MCPST Annual Meeting The Synchrotron Radiation and Neutron Research Forum was held at the 2023 MCPST Annual Meeting. The forum of Applications of Synchrotron Light Source in Chemistry was held at the 2023 Chemistry National Meeting. The 2023 International Conference on Modern Challenges in Polymer Science and Technology (MCPST) was held on January 17 and 18 at the National Chang Gung University. On the first afternoon of the conference, Dr. Wei-Tsung Chuang of the NSRRC held the Synchrotron Radiation and Neutron Research Forum, covering various aspects of emerging issues on polymer science, polymeric materials, Li-ion batteries, cell membranes, neutron instruments, and industrial applications. NSRRC scientists introduced the latest techniques applied at the BioSAXS Beamline of the TPS, infrared imaging at the TLS, and the neutron instrument, which was promoted by the Neutron Group. Approximately 80 researchers, scholars, and students participated in the forum and trained on how to use NSRRC facilities and resources in their research. The 2023 Chemistry National Meeting was hosted by the National University of Kaohsiung from March 10 to 12. On the second day of the meeting, the NSRRC held the NSRRC forum entitled “Applications of Synchrotron Light Source in Chemistry”. Five NSRRC scientists presented the advantages and opportunities for synchrotron-radiation techniques in catalysis research, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic imaging, high-energy resolution fluorescence detection studies, hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning transmission X-ray microscopy, and quick-scanning X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Three users shared their experience of using synchrotron-based techniques in their research on heterogeneous catalysis, dual-axis aligned artificial water channels, valence electronic properties, interfacial solvation structures, and oxidation products. 21 st Taiwan–Japan–Korea Symposium on Strongly Correlated Electron Systems The NSRRC hosted the 21 st Taiwan–Japan–Korea Symposium on Strongly Correlated Electron Systems (TJK21) on April 6 and 7, 2023. This symposium was co-organized by the NSRRC and National Tsing Hua University. The symposia series began as a workshop in October 2000, with a focus on the latest research developments in strongly correlated materials in Japan and Korea. In 2005, Taiwan organized the sixth meeting, and the symposium evolved into a rotating event that cycles through Japan, Korea, and Taiwan each year, making it an annual tradition. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the symposium was temporarily suspended for two years. However, it remains an important event that promotes communication and collaboration among Asian countries in the field of strongly correlated materials. This year, the TJK21 covered novel materials and properties of strongly correlated electron systems, including, but not limited to, the following subjects: novel spectroscopy, exotic superconductors, surfaces and interfaces, spin-orbit coupling, frustrated magnetism, and multiferroics. The symposium also included presentations and discussions about state-of-the-art spectroscopic techniques that contribute to the understanding of the above materials, e.g. , time-resolved photoemission, soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, and X-ray magnetic resonant scattering. In total, 80 researchers and students attended the workshop.
