NSRRC Activity Report 2022
Facts and Figures 129 Training Courses Winter School on Free-Electron Lasers Summer Internship The Winter School on Free-Electron Lasers (FEL) 2022 was held at the NSRRC from January 17 to 21. A total of 46 students participated in the 5-day program. To train scientists dedicated to FEL science and technology, the school gave lectures on FEL and its applications in electronics, biomedical science, physics, chemistry, and materials science. FEL is a crucial fourth- generation light source and can provide unprecedented insight into natural and technological mechanisms. Some advanced industrial nations are developing FEL facilities to maintain their positions in light source-enabled science and technology. To promote research on the synchrotron-related sciences and plant roots at the undergraduate level, the NSRRC has organized summer internships since 2013 (with a hiatus in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic) for college juniors and seniors interested in devoting 4 weeks to studying and working in a synchrotron facility. A total of 30 students were accepted into the 2022 Summer Internship program held from July 4 to 29, and 15 high- achieving students were allowed to extend their internship until August 25. Additionally, four students from National Experimental High School were accepted to attend the lectures. Lectures given by NSRRC scientists during the first week covered fundamental concepts ranging from accelerator science to research based on NSRRC beamlines. From the second to fifth weeks, students joined laboratories or endstations to work with scientists on superconducting magnets, ultra-high vacuum technology, gas phase near- edge X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, soft X-ray microscopy, soft X-ray spectroscopy and quantum materials, the structural analysis of materials, biomaterial and protein-biofilm interactions, infrared spectroscopy, Winter School on FEL aimed to cultivate scientists in FEL accelerator technologies. The objective of the summer internship was to promote synchrotron- related sciences at the undergraduate level. the structure and phase transition of soft matter materials, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
