I t is my honor to present the publication of NSRRC Activity Report 2021 to you. More high-profile research works were published in the year 2021, which, in turn, pressed the editorial committee to make tougher decisions in selecting paradigmatic works for this issue. A large number of remarkable works had to be removed in the final version due to limited space. I sincerely express my respect and gratitude to the editors, article reporters and authors of publications. Because of their support, this Activity Report is informative and meaningful. This Activity Report provides a comprehensive review of NSRRC’s overall activities during the year 2021, spread out in the chapters of Research Highlights, Facility Status, Facts and Figures, as well as Appendix. In the Research Highlights, 33 research works were categorized into seven major research fields: Physics and Materials Science, Chemical Science, Soft Matter, Life Science, Energy Science, Environmental and Earth Sciences, and Neutron Science. Each section starts with a summary, which gives readers an overview of the selected research works. What follows is the Facility Status, briefing the operational status of NSRRC’s light sources, the latest development in our accelerator technology, and the introductory reports for 3 soon-to-open new experimental facilities. The Facts and Figures covers the statistics, beamline list, major events, and year- round outreaching activities. However, the routine training courses, summer and winter schools, and annual meetings were cancelled in compliance with the preventive measures and regulations against the pandemic, and thus are unavailable in the issue. Finally, the Activity Report also lists the publications and student dissertations of works using NSRRC facilities in the Appendix. It is my belief that this issue is collective wisdom of the best minds in the NSRRC user community during the year 2021. I sincerely hope that it will motivate readers to unveil the unknown and inspire all to pursue their goals. Chun-Jung Chen Deputy Director Preface
