134 ACTIVITY REPORT 2021 NSRRC Bio-imaging Session at 25 th Biophysics Conference The 25 th Biophysics Conference took place on November 18, 19 and 20 at National Cheng Kung University. NSRRC had a booth exhibition at the conference to promote NSRRC’s research and experimental capabilities as well as the neutron project and facilities. One session in the scientific program, the Bio-imaging session, was organized and chaired by NSRRC’s Deputy Director, Dr. Chun-Jung Chen; this session focused on optical interference microscopy, soft X-ray tomography at TPS 24A, and structural biology. More than 200 participants attended this conference. NSRRC–ANSTO Small-angle Scattering Workshop and Memorial Night for Academician Sow-Hsin Chen "NSRRC–ANSTO Small-Angle Scattering Workshop” and “The Memorial Night for Academician Sow-Hsin Chen” took place on November 19. On this very first occasion, NSRRC and Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) enhanced their scientific research and experimental technology through co-organizing a bilateral workshop after years of collaboration. This bilateral workshop was also incorporated as the soft-matter session for the 2021 Annual Meeting of Taiwan Neutron Science Society (TWNSS), which was held on November 19 and 20. The memorial banquet was co-hosted by NSRRC, TWNSS and College of Nuclear Science at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU). Both workshop and banquet were held online and onsite simultaneously due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Academician Sow-Hsin Chen was an internationally renowned expert in the static and dynamic structures of soft matter and complex fluids. With his never- ending enthusiasm for academic research, he pioneered several theories in the fields of laser, neutron and X-ray scattering analysis. To pay tribute to him, the scientific topics of this NSRRC–ANSTO bilateral seminar centred on the applications of small-angle scattering techniques applied to study gels and solutions. In addition to an introduction to the technical development of small-angle neutron/X-ray scattering by scientists from ANSTO and NSRRC, domestic users with great potential, such as Prof. Chi-Chung Hua (National Chung Cheng University), Prof. Yi-Tsu Chan (National Taiwan University), Prof. Chien-Lung Wang (National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University) and Dr. Jung-Ren Huang (Academia Sinica), were also invited as plenary speakers. Their inspiring talks received enthusiastic responses from the participants. In the evening, “The Memorial Night for Academician Sow- Hsin Chen” began with opening remarks from the NSRRC Deputy Director, Dr. Chun-Jung Chen, and the former President of NTHU, Prof. Lih-Juann Chen. “Academician Sow-Hsin Chen taught at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States for a long time. He often returned to Taiwan to contribute what he learned. He also provided an endowment fund to establish the ‘Sow-Hsin Chen Distinguished Lecture Series on Neutron Science and Technology’ for facilitating the development of neutron and synchrotron X-ray scattering in Taiwan,” said Prof. Chen. Academician Chung-Yuan Mou gave an overview of Academician Chen’s scientific achievements over the course NSRRC–ANSTO Small-angle Scattering Workshop was organized for the very first time after years of collaboration.
