142 ACTIVITY REPORT 2020 Selected NEHS students took part in experiments with NSRRC scientists. Learning Opportunities for NEHS Students NSRRC has begun to provide learning opportunities for the National Experimental High School (NEHS) at Hsinchu Sci- ence Park since 2019. In year 2020, NEHS selected 22 high- school students to participate in experiments with NSRRC scientists. The students first took eight thematic classes on radiation safety, research and science related to synchrotron radiation, and then they began thematic studies in a group with NSRRC scientists. This year, seven scientists at NSRRC provided students with ten research topics, including viral protein purification and crystalline structure; environmen- tally friendly hydrogen generator; artificial photosynthesis; antibacterial proteins for a glimmer of new antibacterial drugs; crystalline protein research on non-invasive cataract treatment; graphene in outer space; studies on the phys- ical properties of light, thin and short two-dimensional materials; the development of structural colored materials inspired from bird feathers; the development of capacitors inspired from nature; and molecular biology. The learning opportunities helped to sow the seeds of knowledge in high-school students, and provided brilliant students with opportunities to explore a national laboratory.
