Every year, the Ministry of Education awards the superlatives with National Chair Professorships and Academic Awards in five categories, for the purpose of recognizing and honoring individuals who have made significant contributions in research and demonstrated a commitment to high quality teaching and research. The latest list of the recipients for the 24th National Chair Professorships and the 64st Academic Awards was announced on December 17th, and 6 of them are NSRRC users and adjunct researchers.

Distinguished Chair Prof. Ann-Shyn Chiang in Department of Life Science and Director of Brain Research Center at National Tsing Hua University, who is also an adjunct distinguished researcher of the NSRRC, is a high-profile figure in the field of neuroscience research around the world. He is the first scholar in Taiwan whose research results were published in the prestigious journal Cell. So far he has made tremendous contributions on unraveling the mysterious brain atlas and the mechanism of memory formation. Prof. Chiang received the National Chair Professorship in the category of Biology and Medical and Agricultural Science.

Chair Prof. Bing Joe Hwang in Chemical Engineering at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, who is a long-term user and also an adjunct scientist of the NSRRC, received the National Chair Professorship in the category of Engineering and Applied Sciences. His research interests include electrochemistry, lithium-ion batteries, fuel cells and interfacial phenomena, by combining experiments and theoretical calculations. Prof. Wen-Chang Chen in Chemical Engineering at National Taiwan University, also received National Chair Professorship in the same category as Prof. Hwang. He is committed to the studies on polymer nanocomposites for electronics and photonics and nanostructured block polymers, making extraordinary contributions to the scientific development and industrial application of the fields.

Prof. Ru-Shi Liu in Chemistry of National Taiwan University, was presented with the Academic Award in the category of Mathematics and Natural Science. Being a remarkable inorganic material chemist, he specializes in the development and applications on light to light phosphor materials, light switching to electric energy, and biochemical medicine light to heat and photodynamic therapy of nanomaterials.

Dr. Hanna Yuan, a Distinguished Research Fellow at Institute of Molecular Biology, Academia Sinica, and Prof. Yuh-Ju Sun in Life Science of National Tsing Hua University both received the Academic Awards in the category of Biology and Medical and Agricultural Science. Dr. Yuan’s research focuses on structural biology, protein chemistry and the mechanism of ribonucleic acid metabolism. She uses X-ray crystallography mainly, together with biochemical and biophysical approaches, to determine how these proteins function in trimming and degradation of RNA/DNA in diverse ways. Prof. Sun’s research specialties are the membrane proteins, biophysics, structural biology, protein crystallography, X-ray diffraction, and computer simulations. She elucidates the structure and function of protein molecules by X-ray crystallography.
