L’Oreal Taiwan recently announced that Dr. Li-Chyong Chen was the winner of its Outstanding Women in Science Award for 2017. She is Director of the Center for Condensed Matter Sciences (CCMS) of National Taiwan University (NTU) and a member of the NSRRC Board of Supervisors. Dr. Chen graduated from Department of Physics at NTU and earned her PhD degree in Applied Physics at Harvard. She was a materials scientist at General Electric (GE) for years and has worked for CCMS since 1994. She specializes in nano science and technology and energy applications. Her recent research focuses on the development of earth-abundant materials for photosynthesis and CO2 conversion, solar-hydrogen and solar-fuels, solar cells, fuel cells, supercapacitors and thermoelectric applications. In addition to numerous awards, over the course of her exceptional career she has obtained 7 patents in USA and 6 in Taiwan, and had more than 380 publications, cited over 11,500 times. In 2010 she became the first Taiwanese to be elected as USA Materials Research Society Fellow. Following the L'ORÉAL-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science established in 1998, L'Oreal Taiwan initiated the Outstanding Women in Science Award in 2008 for the explicit purpose of recognizing and rewarding Taiwanese female scientists' efforts and contributions in scientific research. The award is co-organized by Wu Chien-Shiung Education Foundation and National League of Women as well, with aims to carry forward the legacy of Dr. Chien-Shiung Wu, the "First Lady of Physics” in the 20th century, and encourage young female students to pursue a lifelong career in science.
