NSRRC Director, Dr. Shangjr Gwo, won 2016 Hou Chin-Tui Outstanding Honorary Award in Mathematics and Physical Sciences under the category of Fundamental Sciences. His research specialties focus on probing basic physical properties of semiconductor surfaces and interfaces using synchrotron radiation, the properties and applications of low-dimensional nanomaterials (including semiconductor nanostructure, self-assembled monolayers and noble-metal nanoparticles), nanoplasmonics, nanophotonics, and plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy of III-nitride based semiconductors. The interdisciplinary research he engages in, particularly surface science, semiconductor material physics, and nanoscience, has made important impacts to nanostructure research.

Dr. Gwo’s recent studies on plasmonic metamaterials composed of colloidal metal nanoparticles and nanocrystals have received much international attention. His research team recently reported controlled self-assembly techniques of plasmonic nanoparticles and nanocrystals, which take advantage of the internal interactions and external forces to drive the self-assembly process. Their approach can be scaled up to fabricate SERS (Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy) substrates with a large detection area (cm2 scale), and used for developing plasmonic metamaterials with unique optical properties. It has been shown by them that the layer-by-layer assembled colloidal silver nanoparticle films could be used to realize quantitative SM (single-molecule)-SERS in an efficient and reliable way.

Established by “Hou Chin-Tui Foundation” in 1991, the Hou Chin-Tui Outstanding Honorary Award recognizes outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to education, research, and promotion in the fields of fundamental sciences, materials science, metallurgy, environmental protection, and eco-friendly construction. The award aims to strengthen and promote the development of science and technology in Taiwan.
